Matildas midfielder Clare Wheeler has welcomed the Australian government’s decision to grant asylum to five Iranian football players, saying “it’s great football in the growth of the women’s game can shed light on these issues”.
“It is a really complex situation … it’s paramount that their health and wellbeing is protected,” she said.
On Monday night, the five women were moved to a safe location by the Australian Federal Police.
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke has since also offered humanitarian visas to the entire Iranian women’s football team, saying they’re welcome to stay.
