The NSW government has announced a $3 billion plan to upgrade wastewater infrastructure in western Sydney, following the discovery of debris balls — dubbed “poo balls” — on Sydney beaches.
The Malabar wastewater treatment plant, which services nearly two million people across the city’s south-west, has been identified as the likely source.
However, critics warn the decade-long plan may not ease pressure on Sydney’s aging sewage system fast enough to prevent future contamination risks.
