Charles made it clear that since Harry and Meghan are still not working members of the British royal family, they remain āprivate citizensā.
According to the BBC, a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex claimed that the couple were āa little surprised not to have been told about [the announcement] in advanceā, with insider sources telling PEOPLE that Harry and Meghanās team was informed about the letter just an hour before it was sent out.
King Charlesā letter stressed that the Sussexās position, ādistinct from the State and Royal duties undertaken by the working Royal Familyā¦ will continue to be fully respected.ā
āAll correspondence and administrative questions relating to the couple should be sent to their office, which will continue to operate separately from The Royal Household.ā
