The 54-year-old confessed that she often felt lonely and isolated during social occasions because she couldnât speak Danish and felt a world away from her life back home.
âWhen you donât know the language, and youâre sitting at a dinner, or playing a game and canât really follow, you feel a bit left out.â
But, she added that over time, she began to feel more included as her Danish improved and when others deliberately spoke slowly so that she could understand.
Now, having lived in Denmark for more than two decades â after meeting the Crown Prince in Sydney in 2000 â she explained that she can speak the native language fluently, even though her children sometimes poke fun at her Australian accent.
