A tragic shark attack off the coast of Western Australia has claimed the life of a 35-year-old spearfisherman. The local man was mauled by a suspected 4.5-metre Great White shark near Michaelmas Island, just two kilometres from Albany. Despite being rushed to shore by boat and met by emergency paramedics, he could not be saved. This marks the third fatal attack on a spearfisherman in just three weeks across the country. Shark expert Daryl McPhee notes that spearfishing inherently carries heightened risks due to the presence of targeted fish. The incident follows a recent satellite tracking alert triggered by a tagged Great White shark in nearby Frenchman Bay.
Beyond Western Australia, emergency rescue crews in Sydney’s south-west executed a delicate, hour-long operation to extricate a 45-year-old driver trapped inside a van following a severe collision with a parked utility vehicle in Picnic Point. Meanwhile, in Tweed Heads on the New South Wales and Queensland border, a 31-year-old man has been formally charged with murder following a fatal assault at The Hermitage. A 29-year-old woman has also been charged with hindering the police investigation.
In Melbourne’s north-west, a 16-year-old youth has been released on bail after a dramatic attempted carjacking outside an Epping laundromat, which left resident Vivien Aquilina and the local community shaken. In Victoria’s hospitality sector, prominent bar owner Dominic Porter has slammed Premier Jacinta Allan over an ongoing arson and firebombing crisis impacting city venues, including his own establishment, The Albion Hotel in South Melbourne.
Finally, in sports news, Socceroos forward Tete Yengi scored a sensational goal on debut during a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in San Diego. In the NRL, Brisbane Broncos coach Michael Maguire faces a club crisis after a fifth consecutive defeat, losing 28-23 to the Gold Coast Titans.
