During a visit to Kuala Lumpur in 1998, Elizabeth II and Prince Philip broke royal protocol when they signed the footballs of two Manchester United fans.

It’s believed that the no-signature rule is in place to avoid any chance of forgery.

In fact, the Princess of Wales was spotted observing the protocol in 2023 when she told a group of schoolchildren, “I’m not allowed to write my signature, it’s just one of those rules… I can’t write my name, but I can draw.” before offering the children drawings of flowers, trees, and plants.
