Sulaiman Zandinan is a referee in Queensland’s top men’s and women’s state football leagues.
But his journey began far from the pitch, shaped by conflict and survival.
Zandinan was just 12 years old when the self-proclaimed Islamic State group attacked the Yazidi community in Sinjar, Iraq, killing and kidnapping thousands.
After being held captive for almost two years, Zandinan and his family fled through the desert in a “do or die” moment.
After eventually settling in Toowoomba, Queensland, he found a way forward through football and is inspiring others in his community.
