US President Donald Trump said he won’t use force to control Greenland during a speech at the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
“I probably won’t get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force where we would be, frankly, unstoppable. But I won’t do that,” he said.
Also speaking at the forum, NATO secretary general Mark Rutte said both Trump and other NATO leaders are right, but only “thoughtful diplomacy” should be used to negotiate control of the autonomous Danish territory.
In a speech at the European Parliament, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said US threats of new tariffs over Greenland are “simply wrong” and that the country’s future is for its people to decide.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer echoed her sentiment in parliament, saying: “The future is for Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark alone.”
