Trump’s ‘joke was distasteful and unfortunate’, says US women’s ice hockey captain

Following a video of US President Donald Trump inviting the US men’s ice hockey team to the White House and saying that he would “have to bring the women’s team” or risk getting “impeached”, the women’s captain called the remark “distasteful and unfortunate”.

The US men’s and women’s ice hockey teams both won gold medals at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, after defeating Canada.

Trump was congratulating the men’s team for winning over a phone call in a locker room when he extended the invitation.

Later, while speaking to the press, women’s team captain Hilary Knight said the moment “is a great teaching point to really shine light on how women should be championed for their amazing feats”.

“I have to sit … in front of you and explain someone else’s behaviour. It’s not my responsibility,” she said

“What is is shifting the focus and shifting the narrative of this amazing accomplishment that we all did together.”
