Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claims its air defences shot down two US-made LUCAS drones near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
According to Iranian reports, the drones were intercepted over Bandar Khamir in Hormozgan by the Imam Sajjad Corps. The reported shootdowns come amid escalating military tensions following US strikes on targets on Iran’s Qeshm Island, which Washington described as defensive.
The LUCAS is a low-cost, one-way attack drone developed by the United States using design features inspired by Iran’s Shahed-136. Washington had not immediately confirmed the reported interceptions.
Could the latest claims signal a new phase in the US-Iran confrontation? What could this mean for security around the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route?
