For decades, scientists debated two very different ideas about where modern humans came from.
Did Homo sapiens evolve separately in different parts of the world from ancient human populations already living there? Or did our species originate in Africa before spreading across the globe?
Fossils kept the debate alive for years, but DNA began to change the picture. Genetic evidence strongly supported a recent African origin for modern humans and also offered clues about when a major migration out of Africa took place, roughly 50,000–60,000 years ago.
But as later fossil discoveries would show, the full story of human migration may be much more complicated.
