Jaymee-Lee Hitchcock told Yahoo Lifestyle that she had already booked a family holiday in Japan when she found out about the restrictions faced by those with tattoos.
She said, âThe travel agent hadnât given me any information like that⌠People need to know this sort of stuff.â
Australian travel agent Alex Stragalinos told Yahoo Lifestyle that âTokyo Disneyland and DisneySea state on their website that they ban âinappropriate apparel and tattoosâ.â
Alex explained that a historic association in Japan between tattoos and organised crime means that tattoos are still viewed as anti-social in public settings.
He added, âTourists with tattoos are often banned from entering public spaces such as onsens, beaches, gyms, and public pools.â
âMy advice for those travelling to Japan is to be sensible when it comes to displaying tattoos.â
âIf you are able to cover them whilst out in public, then do so out of respect.â
