Socceroo Jackson Irvine says he supports FIFA’s rule change around mouth covering after Paraguay’s Miguel Almiron became the first player to be sent off over the new rule introduced earlier this year.
The Paraguayan midfielder was given a straight red card in first-half stoppage time for putting his hand over his mouth in a confrontation with Türkiye’s Mert Muldur.
FIFA introduced the change to help combat racism and discrimination on the pitch. FIFA President Gianni Infantino said of the new rule, “If you do not have something to hide, you don’t hide your mouth when you say something”.
